Session 7 – Having Begun in the Spirit

Preparation:

Read Chapter 7 of the book Absolute Surrender.

Session Outline

Ice Breaker Question/Introduction (Optional):

Worship/Prayer: Some groups may want to incorporate a time of worship, other groups may choose to simply begin in prayer.

Bible Reading (Take time to read the Bible aloud): Galatians Chapter 3

• How important is it that we learn to be led by God’s Spirit? (Explain)

 

Discussion Questions

1.  What is the primary thing that stood out to you from the chapter “Having Begun in the Spirit”? (Share/discuss)

2. Do you agree or disagree with the author that spiritual fruitlessness among Christians is due to a lack of trusting the Holy Spirit? Give a reason for your answer.

3.  How do we know if our actions are done by the power of the Holy Spirit or by the flesh? Consider Gal. 5:22.

4.  What is the difference between receiving the Holy Spirit and yielding to the Holy Spirit?

5.  Are there things you have attempted for God that have seemed to produce less fruit than you had hoped? Having read this chapter, are there things you are being shown about those efforts?

Action Points

1.  Take time to do a spiritual inventory on your life over the last 6 months. What fruit did you see? What would you like to have seen? Bring these things to the Lord and ask Him to reveal to you which things were done in your own flesh and which were done in the power of the Holy Spirit.

2.  Have you neglected abiding in the Holy Spirit? Take time to confess this to the Lord and ask Him to fill you once again with the indwelling power He freely offers.

Prayer Focus

Pray and ask God to give you more sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

“Lord Jesus, thank you for your Holy Spirit. Teach me to learn the difference of when I am IN the Spirit versus in my flesh.  Help me to abide in You daily.  In faith I receive the fruit You so eagerly desire to give me. (Continue to pray as God’s Spirit leads you.)
